Charity
A HELPING HAND FOR MANY LOCAL CAUSES   Renowned for their generosity of spirit, the people of the area have long been connected not only with the concept of self-help but that of helping others and to that end the upcoming Newry City Marathon, Half Marathon and Fun Run scheduled for May31st will provide an opportunity for fundraising on a grand scale in the seven weeks remaining    In years past the Marathon Committee has donated thousands of pounds to designated charities ranging from the Hospice and Women’s Aid to Headway and Concern to name but a few and this year will be no different except for the method of distribution   As part of the organisers’ desire to ensure the smooth running and safety of the events bodies wishing to benefit from funding are this year required to furnish a number of marshals who will receive training in order to effectively steward on the day  The allowance allocated to each marshal by the Marathon Committee can then be given to the group or organisation that they represent and in this way a partnership is established between people pledged to make the day a success   The required number of marshals has already been reached and each one will undertake their training prior to May 31st The role of marshal on the day is crucial for the staging of all events and one which carries a great deal of responsibility as it involves the security of participants and spectators alike   A great deal of work is involved in the organisation of the various events and each year innovation and improvements are features of the planning with the goal of safety firmly in mind  To this end many public bodies and authorities are consulted and in tandem with them it is as always the aim of the organisers to present a day to remember for all the right reasons   This year among the clubs, associations and charities to benefit will be Cancer Research, Macmillan Nurses, Autism NI and St John Bosco, all of which are involved in positive work on both local and national levels  In addition to the money donated to charity by the Marathon Committee, a substantial amount of cash will be independently raised through the efforts of a wide range of groups in the area mainly through individual’s efforts with the familiar sponsor card      A word of caution would not go amiss for those giving in support of causes  Please be aware that bogus charity collectors have been identified as operating in this area in the past and donors should be vigilant and careful before parting with their cash  Any suspicious activity should be reported to the authorities as the good intentions of some are being abused and worthy causes are subsequently losing out  Notwithstanding it is hoped that in terms of monies raised, May 31st will be a bumper day for worthy causes and a further illustration of its value in the civic calendar
