‘Newry City showcasing Sporting Excellence’

The 2016 Newry City Marathon, which will take place on Sunday 29th May, was officially launched on Monday morning by event organisers Newry City Centre Management and principal sponsor Newry Credit Union.   Over 1,000 participants are expected to walk, jog or run which will showcase Newry City’s sporting excellence at its best.

Speaking at the launch, Gary Stokes – Vice Chairman of Newry City Centre Management commented; we are delighted to be undertaking the organisation of this year’s prestige marathon event in the heart of the City centre.  Over the past 8 years this event has gone from strength to strength and this year the main aim is to attract more athletes from home and further afield to sign up.  The uptake in running within the area has become undoubtedly serious business for individuals to reach their fitness goals which is great to see and the offering at the Newry City Marathon will challenge participants to beat their personal best goals.  Mr Stokes stated that we are urging citizens to come to Newry on the 29 May and line the streets to show support for the runners and enjoy a range of free family fun entertainment that will be on offer at the finish line.  

Newly appointed Chairman: Mr Sean Hogan of Newry Credit Union stated: Newry Credit Union have pledged their support for the 6th consecutive year and look forward to working in partnership with Newry City Centre Management.  We are proud to be associated with the Newry City Marathon that resonates so well with the local community and we are privileged to have played our part in the success of what is now a key event within the sporting calendar.  The staff at the Newry Credit Union take great delighted in organising the Fun Run, which encourages family / community participation.  The Fun Run is very enjoyable and is not taken too seriously but more importantly promotes health and wellbeing in young people.  

Race Director Paddy Duffy stated: The traditional route will take the direction of Newry Towpath at WIN Business Park and will return to the finish line at Newry Credit Union on Hill Street.  Mr Duffy confirmed that there will be a slight change to the start of the marathon by introducing two waves with elite runners being allocated wave number two.   

Event Organiser Eddy Curtis stated: As event organiser it is great to see so much support for the Newry City Marathon.  I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our principal sponsor Newry Credit Union for their continued support and generosity along with Autoline Insurance, ITS New Media, Crilly’s Sweets, Brass Monkey and Bunzl Rafferty Hospitality Products.  The events team look forward to working together to deliver an exciting programme of events.
