The Annual Kevin Heaney Memorial 4mile HANDICAP
This 4mile handicap race will take place on
Sunday 20th December at 10:00am at Greenbank Industrial Estate Newry
The event was formerly known as Seaney’s Christmas Classic and is run on a handicap basis with the fastest runners giving a start to the slower runners, so you don’t have to be the fastest to be the winner. The real winner on the day is Newry Hospice as every penny of the many thousands of pounds raised on the day and in past events goes directly to this worthy cause.
Newcomers are welcome. All you have to do is turn up, give Sean your (honest) estimated finish time for the 4 mile flat course, no matter how long you think it will take you. Sean will then allocate a starting time for you. The fastest runners of the day will get a scratch time and go last. It is a great event and when the handicap system is allocated correctly it always produces an exciting finish. Sean can only allocate times as he is given them so try to be fair & accurate with your estimation.
In 2008 Francis Craven did a sterling job in arranging sponsorship of T shirts for all finishers and spot prizes worth £25 each. Damien Feehan organised the first under 15 2.5k race which alone raised over £300 for the Hospice.
Manual time keeping as always was by the dependable team of Paul Mathers and Tommy Brannigan assisted by Ronnie Taylor.
The Kevin Heaney Memorial Race not only raises funds for Newry Hospice but is also dedicated to the memory of a Newry marathon runner who passed away at an early age.

Congrats to all those who ran, watched or helped to organise the race.
I can't help to ask the question, where are all the other runners in the area. Surely it can't be too hard to give up an hour on a Sunday morning to support both running in the area and a great charity.
Some of those there could have been doing other things with their time but decided to support both causes. Pity others can't make a better effort to see their poorly supported sport furthered. |

Timebomb i think you are being a little harse on the local running scene,at this time of year SADLY some of the more regular race goers couldnt make it,by the way the same people where raising money for the same cause in the Quays.Which in turn is a very noble effort.
The Christmas classic is a great event, but due to the success of local racing ,you now have several options, maybe this and its normally the first week in December had a contributory factor.
I second your opinion of locals not supporting local events ,many choose to run Berlin ,Belfast,Dublin and New York ,but not their local marathon or half marathon.
Although all have there own merits. |
